The flat roofs of buildings are exposed for maximum
duration of the day. The scorching heat of the summer sun makes the roof get
badly heated. The effect of the sun gets transferred to the rooms below. There
are many ways to avoid or reduce it.
This mainly happens because of concrete roofs. Concrete
being a very dense material retains heat for a very long time. This heat is
radiated into the rooms at night when the surroundings are getting cold. Due to
the stillness of the air below the roof, the air in the room also tends to
become warm.
Some of the easy roofing solutions are:

Insulate the room from above and below

Shade the roof: If sunlight is heating the roof, shade it with a
lightweight roof made from GI sheet. This prevents the roof slab from heating.
The provided shelter can also be used for gatherings. Plants are also a great
alternative to shade a roof. Unlike tin roofs, plants do not get heated. They
absorb heat and light.
Top insulation: Installing a terrace garden is also a good choice.
The plants and grass will shade the roof while the earth will insulate the
roof. Wetness in the soil will also cool the roof. In Rajasthan, roofs are
painted white with lime. White lime reflects a great deal of heat that will
otherwise be absorbed by the roof.
In-built insulation: In buildings under construction, insulation can be
built into the roof. Hollow clay panels and light weight foam concrete panels
are available to be used as infills in the roof. This kind of technology has
three benefits – the concrete consumption is decreased, the load on the
structure is reduced and the heat gain in the roof is controlled.
We at IETC offer the ultimate roofing solutions for any kind of structure.
